What?

We are looking for bicycles, bike accessories, and tools for the inhabitants of the refugee home in Hennigsdorf. We hope to get fifty to sixty bikes for adults and children in the end, so that there's one for everyone.
In the best case it would be bikes that can be fixed with reasonable efforts or (even better) are already functioning. Furthermore we'd be happy about locks, bags, child seats, lights etc.
And whoever wants to join for the repairs is welcome to visit us on one of the repair days.

Why?

The Hennigsdorf refugee home is located between business premises just north of the city limits of Berlin. More than fifty people are accommodated in this house at the edge of the settlement of Hennigsdorf. The distances into the centre and to the shops are quite long accordingly. In Germany most refugee homes are situated in peripheral places outside residential areas.
If you come to Germany as a refugee, you will generally be deprived of a number of otherwise self-evident rights by official directives. Some examples:

The freedom to choose one's place of residence is suspended. Refugees are distributed to a designated federal state, administrative district and municipality according to the state's needs. They are usually accommodated in community houses with virtually no privacy.

People are, often for many years, not allowed to look for employment to arrange and finance their lives by themselves.

The freedom of movement, to visit friends and relatives or to participate in the social life, is usually limited to the
assigned municipality due to the "Residenzpflicht" ("duty of residence"). It is only allowed to leave this area with permission of the administration. Applications for this are frequently rejected.

Having one's own bike can't restore these administratively limited rights. But we hope that it will help to improve everyday life, to allow activities, to make and keep contacts and to contribute to linking with other people to collectively fight for rights.

Where and when?

Since we will have repair days in both Hennigsdorf and Berlin and because the bike workshop of the Schwarzer Kanal is in it's winter break now, there will not be regular weekly dates in the near future.
It's probably best if you check here from time to time when we will be where.

If you can't arrange to visit us, but have things to contribute, you can write us an eMail as well or call us, so that we can make an appointment when and where we can pick things up.

[...]

On 11-22 we had our first repair day in Hennigsdorf. We can use the workshop of the Conny Island youth club, which means there is a roof and a heated room. We still have problems though with finding a place close to the Conny where we can keep bikes, spare parts and tools, because we don't have any storage space in the Conny. If you know someone who has a cellar or garage close to the Conny that we might be allowed to use, please write us a Mail to bike-aid@gmx.net

At the Schwarzer Kanal we will, when it gets too cold, work inside one of the wagons that we can also heat with an oven. Most likely in January the bike workshop will move to it's winter quartiers and we will have to see if there will be space for us as well or if we can find an alternative.
